In Memory Julia Hodgdon - our own special Grammie

Yesterday was our maternal grandmother, Julia Hodgdon's birthday.  She was born December 28, 1903 and passed away December 2, 1993. She was a hardworking, talented cook and seamstress who loved her three grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was our role model for leading an honorable, Christian life and demonstrating the importance of having faith that things will work out or that we will be given the strength to handle what's given us.

  1. I missed it. :(
I'm wishing I'd celebrated with Necco wafers... or maybe peanut butter blossoms.

  2. That portrait of Julia is incredible: what a regal and strong soul! Did you take the photo?

  3. Jess, Grammie made sure we went to Sunday School and church every Sunday. We were expected to sit very quietly throughout the service. We were allowed to do our Sunday School workbook, but she did resort to Necco wafers or peppermint life savers, when necessary. The peanut butter blossoms only came out a few times a year. They were kept on the buffet in a covered glass candy dish. I visited those much more frequently. Grandpa Hodgdon loved those white/pink Canada mints and shared them often.

Anita, when we lost Mama, I was very upset because while I had many pictures of her with family, I had few single/portraits. She hated having her pictures taken, would never give people a difficult time about it. But, when we were trying to find special pictures of her, we found very few of her alone. I was crushed and swore that would never happen again. In the last year or so before we lost Grammie, I took tons of pictures of her. Twice, in particular, I found her in her Sunday best and used my stash of films -click, click, clicking. Don't you just love her dress? She made nearly all of her clothing, and had a lovely, quality wardrobe and covered them all with her handmade aprons.
